A 23-year-old man died Thursday when a vehicle struck him as he was walking on Interstate 5 in the Banker’s Hill area.
A Kia SUV hit the pedestrian at about 6 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway near West Hawthorn Street, just north of downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending family notification.
No other injuries were reported.
The accident prompted the closure of two lanes on the freeway in the area for about an hour, CHP public-affairs Officer Jesse Matias said.
The pedestrian fatality was the second to occur on a San Diego freeway over less than six hours. Shortly before 12:30 a.m., a car struck and killed a woman on eastbound Interstate 8 near Presidio Park in Mission Valley, the CHP reported.
Late Wednesday morning, yet another pedestrian, described only as male, was fatally injured when a car struck him on state Route 94 near 25th Street in the Golden Hill area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
